Learning needs analysis

The challenge

Effective learning and development can make a real difference to both the short and long-term performance of any business.

However, in order to ensure that any learning and development activity is effective, a number of key questions need to be answered:

  • what are the competencies required by the organisation, both now and in the future?
  • what are the current gaps in competence?
  • what are the future gaps in competence?
  • how will addressing these gaps help the organisation achieve its objectives?
  • what options are available to meet the identified learning and development needs?

Answering these questions takes time and effort. Questionnaires and interviews may be required along with skills, knowledge and behaviour audits. The business may wish to benchmark its approach against similar organisations and the industry as a whole. Research will be required to identify options and the range of potential solution providers. These can be difficult questions for an internal business manager to answer. And then there is the question of putting together the business case to demonstrate the expected return on the new investment that will be required.
